Across Kenya, young people are increasingly taking the lead in addressing environmental challenges and building sustainable communities. Through the Green Rising Project, the Kenya Scouts Association, in partnership with UNICEF Kenya and Rainforest Alliance, is supporting young people to become active participants in environmental conservation, climate action and sustainable development.
At the heart of the Green Rising Project is the belief that young people are not merely beneficiaries of environmental programmes but important drivers of change. The project is equipping young people with knowledge and practical skills in smart agriculture, environmental conservation and climate action. Through training in Smart Agriculture, Scouts are gaining skills in climate-smart farming, soil health and conservation, water-efficient farming, crop management, agroforestry, sustainable food production and environmentally responsible farming practices.
In Embu County, the project has supported Youth – led environmental restoration efforts targeting degraded land in Mbeere North, Mbeere South and Mwea. By involving and supporting young people to be part of environmental conservation and climate action efforts, the project is creating opportunities for them to contribute directly to landscape restoration while developing practical skills for sustainable livelihoods.
The initiative reflects a shared commitment to empowering young people with the knowledge, skills and opportunities they need to protect the environment, contribute to a more sustainable future and contribute to a collective vision of a greener Kenya.
