In an effort to contribute to the realization of the Sustainable Development Goal (SDG) No. 3 — Good Health and Well-being — Roboas Scouts Open Crew Western Region, lead an Anti-Jigger Campaign in Vihiga sub- county to promote hygiene, dignity, and care to members of this community.
Removing jiggers, treating wounds, and improving hygiene prevents reinfection and promotes physical and mental well-being. Together, Scouts across the country are creating healthier homes and stronger communities in jigger infected areas.
Jiggers, also known as tungiasis, are a significant health issue in Kenya, affecting an estimated 2 million people. Western Kenya, particularly in rural areas, high prevalence of jiggers infections are reported , with some communities experiencing infestation rates as high as 50%. Children and the elderly are particularly vulnerable to jigger infestation and face stigma and social isolation.
This grassroots health action by Scouts contributes not only to the global progress in the actualization of the SDGs but also serves as an example of compassion and adherence to the Scout principal of duty to others.
