The Kenya Scouts Association (KSA) and the Packaging Producer Responsibility Organisation (PAKPRO) are partnering to equip young people and schools with the knowledge, skills and opportunities to take practical action on waste management, recycling and environmental stewardship.
The partnership, formalized through a Memorandum of Understanding during the launch of the Tuwezeshe Schools Programme, brings together PAKPRO’s expertise in packaging recovery and the circular economy, and KSA’s nationwide youth network and community reach.
Together, the organizations will create opportunities for Scouts and learners to take practical action through waste segregation, recycling and packaging recovery. Together, the two entities are moving beyond awareness to action.
Speaking during the launch, PAKPRO Chief Executive Officer, Joyce Gachugi-Waweru said that “The future of recycling begins with education. Through this partnership, we are investing in young people by giving them practical opportunities to protect the environment through everyday actions. Every paper sheet and every carton recovered is a step towards a cleaner Kenya and a stronger circular economy.”
The Chief Commissioner at the Association Shujaa Victor Radido welcomed the partnership as an opportunity to strengthen environmental education through action stating that “Scouting is about preparing young people to make a positive contribution to society and together with PAKPRO, we are mentoring Scouts into champions of circular economy.”
The Deputy Chief Commissioner at the Association Alice Kihungi echoed Mr Radido’s sentiments stating that indeed through empowering young people to make positive change, the Association is not only changing behavior but also building a generation capable of shaping a more sustainable Kenya.
Moses Danda the National Executive Commissioner at the Association welcomed the initiative terming it as timely and well anchored in the 2026-2030 Kenya Scouts Association Strategic Plan under the Social Environmental Pillar that will see Scouts being engaged in various environmental sustainability initiatives including waste management. “I see this partnership as an extension of the already existing Scouts Environmental Programme on Plastic Tide Turners that is already championing plastic waste reduction and recycling”, he said appreciating PAKPRO for identifying Scouts as key players in Environmental Sustainability.
The Tuwezeshe programme goes beyond creating awareness. It seeks to give young people practical opportunities to participate in waste separation, recycling and recovery while helping them understand the value of the materials they use every day.
As part of the programme, the partnership will support the establishment of segregated recycling stations in schools, including the rollout of the first Adopt-a-Bin recycling station at Rowallan National Scouts Camp.This creates an opportunity for schools to become practical centres of environmental learning where young people don’t just learn about sustainability, but lead it.
Through this partnership, KSA and PAKPRO are calling on Scouts, learners, teachers, parents, schools and partners across Kenya to make waste segregation, recycling and environmental responsibility part of everyday life.
